abstract

background: the purpose of this study is to demonstrate the advantages of gradient echo (gre) sequences in the detection and characterization of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis compared to conventional magnetic resonance sequences. methods: a total of 17 patients with cerebral venous thrombosis (cvt) were evaluated using different magnetic resonance imaging (mri) sequences. the mri sequences included t 1 -weighted spin echo (se) imaging, -weighted turbo se (tse), fluid attenuated inversion recovery (flair), -weighted conventional gre, and diffusion weighted imaging (dwi). mr venography (mrv) images were obtained as the golden standard. results: venous sinus thrombosis was best detectable in -weighted conventional gre sequences in all patients except in one case. venous thrombosis was undetectable in dwi. -weighted gre sequences were superior to -weighted tse, t 1 -weighted se, and flair. enhanced mrv was successful in displaying the location of thrombosis. conclusion: -weighted conventional gre sequences are probably the best method for the assessment of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. the mentioned method is non-invasive; therefore, it can be employed in the clinical evaluation of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.

Assessment of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis using T2*-weighted gradient echo magnetic resonance imaging sequences

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the advantages of gradient echo (GRE) sequences in the detection and characterization of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis compared to conventional magnetic resonance sequences. METHODS A total of 17 patients with cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) were evaluated using different magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences. The MRI sequences i...

Diagnosis of cerebral venous thrombosis with echo-planar T2*-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance (MR) signal changes suggestive of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) on T1- and T2-weighted images may be subtle and their identification requires a high degree of suspicion. Magnetic resonance venography remains essential for definitive diagnosis. Recent reports have shown that T2(*)-weighted MR sequence is more sensitive than T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and fluid-att...

Cardiac and Hepatic T2*-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract Background Iron overload is the main transfusion related side effects in patients with transfusion dependent hemoglobinopathies. Severe iron deposition in tissues leads to organ dysfunction. Many organs can be affected such as heart, liver, and endocrine organs. Cardiac failure and liver fibrosis are the consequent of Iron overload in transfusion dependent hemoglobinopathy. Magne...

Pattern of magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance venography changes in cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.

BACKGROUND Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a common but highly under-recognised condition, which is missed not only by general practitioners but also by neurologists. Computerised tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain alone is not sufficient to diagnose this condition. Objective of this study was to explore the pattern of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic ...

Hippocampal Microbleed on a Post-Mortem T2∗-Weighted Gradient-Echo 7.0-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging?

The present post-mortem study of a brain from an Alzheimer patient showed on a T(2)∗-weighted gradient-echo 7.0-T MRI of a coronal brain section a hyposignal in the hippocampus, suggesting a microbleed. On the corresponding histological examination, only iron deposits around the granular cellular layer and in blood vessel walls of the hippocampus were observed without evidence of a bleeding. Th...

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance in cerebral venous thrombosis.

BACKGROUND Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a cause of stroke with obscure pathophysiologic properties that differ from arterial stroke. Its main mechanisms of pathophysiology are the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier and the coexistence of cytotoxic and vasogenic edema. However, conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) cannot differentiate between vasogenic and cytotoxic edema. OB...
